Ways to serve locally in Fort Mill

In a town like Fort Mill, it can be easy to assume there aren't a lot of needs or ways to serve locally. After all, the schools are great, the poverty low, and the community often appears to thrive with its well-maintained parks, vibrant local businesses, and engaged residents.
However, what you might not realize is that underneath this and just on the outer fringes of our community, there are needs all around. Also, so much of the thriving that takes place in our community is due to the involvement of so many dedicated volunteers. To help you join that base of dedicated volunteers, we've created this article to list out a number of ways that you, your family, or your church group can consider serving locally.

Trash clean up with Town of Fort Mill
The Town offers a number of volunteer opportunities to help keep Fort Mill clean and beautiful. Every second Saturday they host trash clean ups around town. They also offer additional support if you have a location and group of folks looking for a project. In addition, they offer opportunities to clean up around storm drains and even river sweeps to keep our natural areas clean. These are great ways for your group to serve and see the immediate results that you can feel good about. This is a great way to serve as an individual or for families or church groups to serve alongside one another.
Donating and serving at the Fort Mill Care Center
The Fort Mill Care Center is more than a food pantry. While they do provide food and help those who are underserved in our area, they also help with assistance with utilities and other emergency expenses. They are also helpful in referring individual to additional support resource agencies for various needs. The biggest way to help at the care center is donations. Many people donate around the holidays but often forget that some of the highest pantry needs come during the Summer when low income children lose their free breakfast and lunch options.
You can help by hosting a food donation drive in your local neighborhood, at work, or even at church. Simply rally your group to give and you collect the various donations and deliver them to the care center. They also offer volunteer opportunities at the care center but you must undergo volunteer training to fill one of their regular roles at the center.
Volunteer at Somerby or other local assisted living center
Assisted living centers are great places for families and groups to serve. You may be familiar or have seen school or church choirs sing at a senior center during the holidays. But, it's easy to forget about these folks during the other times of the year. Sometimes these individuals are lonely and need to be surrounded by smiling faces.
With a little creativity, you can organize a small group for volunteering. Consider hosting a pop up class that teaches a simple craft or lead a craft activity. If you have kids in your group, this is even better. When you host the event, set up tables for people to sit at. Be sure to station your group members at each table. They can help assist with any questions or with help doing the craft. This also provides an opportunity for group members to converse with the seniors. This is a really great way to love on elderly folks in our community. If you want to add more value, consider doing an activity that helps others in need. You could pack boxes for Operation Christmas Child together with seniors, show a video to help them see the difference it makes, and they pray together over the boxes. If you're a church group, this is a great way to volunteer together.
To get started, contact a local senior living center. You can speak with their director or activities coordinator and suggest ideas like this. They are always looking for ways to invite people to volunteer.
Volunteer at Fort Mill Schools
If you are a parent, you probably already know a number of ways that you can volunteer at your child's school. However, if you don't have school aged kids, schools are always welcoming volunteers. If you officially and directly volunteer at the school, you'll need to complete a background check. However, if you're not looking to volunteer regularly with tutoring or other roles at the school, there are some additional ways to show support.
If you have a group, consider purchasing a breakfast for the teachers and celebrate your appreciation of them. If you are a church, you can get send cards to the teachers with notes of encouragement. Teaching is hard. If you are a church, pray for the school, students and teachers. You can send a note to encourage and let them know you are praying for them.
Additionally, you can support the Foundation for Fort Mill Schools. This organization serves in a number of ways, such as providing free school supplies and snacks to students in need. You can organize a supply drive to help this organization.
Defend the Fatherless
This organization was founded to help foster and adoptive families in our community. There are a number of challenges for foster and adoptive families. Some simply need community support. Others have an additional load of children to raise. The organization seeks to provide resources, encouragement, and assistance for these families.
The organization offers a number of services and volunteers can help by volunteering to organize the clothing closet or to volunteer at one of their social gatherings where families connect with one another. Your group can also prepare freezer meals to provide home cooked meals that families can use on busy and stressful days or when they simply need extra food on hand.
Palmetto Women's Center
This organization provides free pregnancy tests, ultra-sounds, counseling, and parenting classes. This organization provides services to the underserved who are often overwhelmed by an unplanned pregnancy. They work to provide the support and encouragement these families need.
There are ways to volunteer through organizing supply drives for an expecting mother and father, such as diapers, cribs, car seats, and more. You can provide a baby shower of gifts to this organization. Additionally, they offer opportunities such as an annual 5K fundraiser.
Hope of Rock Hill
This organization is a little outside of Fort Mill but a high volume food pantry that is always looking for volunteers to assist their demands. Your group can assist by picking up collected food from donation centers or stocking shelves at the pantry. With so much food coming in and going out, there's always work to be done.
